Countering Terrorism

Editorial Focus
Date:April 1 - May 21, 2012

Introduction

During the last decade anti-terrorism efforts and the so-called homeland security have received an unparalleled focus in history. The threats are numerous and receive a new magnitude and flexibility in a globalised and interdependent world: They range from piracy and drug-trafficking to large-scale terrorist attacks on military and civilian targets. Furthermore, the ties of organised crime and international terrorism appears to never have been so close.

Even the nature of wars and high-intensity conflicts has changed in the face of modern terrorism, creating new challenges to the world's armed forces. Since 2001, the expression "asymmetrical warfare" rings in everybody's ears.

In light of this development, governments and industry step up to the plate to search for new solutions to encounter what may become the shaping element of the early 21st century.
