South American Defence Market

Introduction |
|
In light of the upcoming FIDAE 2010 trade show, defpro.com will begin a defpro.focus in March 2010 bringing together all news and reports on the South American defence market. In an outlook onto this particular market, Forecast International expects defence spending between 2010 and 2014 to total some $267.8 billion / €199.2 billion, despite global recession. A large number of Latin American nations have plans to replace or upgrade ageing equipment while procurement programmes generally originate from necessity rather than threat. However, fears of a possible arms race, such as in the continent’s Northwest, may push governments to address long-standing force structure revitalisation needs. Due to the continued fight against terrorist and contraband activities, including drug-traffic, in many parts of the continent, a significant portion of the force development efforts is focussed on internal and regional security. This, in particular, concerns the requirement for surveillance systems of all types and increased border patrol capabilities. |
