11:10 GMT, October 22, 2009 A leading officer from the Militia Bureau of the Mobilization Department under the General Staff Headquarters (GSH) of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) said in a recent interview that since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the militia construction has basically realized the transformation from quantity and scale to quality and efficiency, from single-service reserve force to three-service reserve one and from mainly reserving manpower to capability construction of implementing tasks in organization system.

With the development of the battle forms, militia, as the reserve force of the PLA, has accelerated its steps for the capability construction of supporting and ensuring the joint operation of all PLA services and arms. In 2007, the GSH approved and released the new edition of the Outline of Militia Military Training and Evaluation. In light of the combat tasks in the future, all the PLA troops of each service and arm actively explore combat and support model for professional militia detachments in combination with actual-troop drill. Through different training and drill with troops from PLA services and arms, the militia’s capability in supporting PLA troops’ combat has been obviously enhanced.
