IDF commanders brief UN Secretary-General on Middle East issues 

13:12 GMT, March 22, 2010 On Saturday (Mar. 20), the Head of IDF Military Intelligence, Maj. Gen. Amos Yadlin, met with UN Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-Moon in Jerusalem and briefed him on the Middle East strategic intelligence picture.

Maj. Gen. Yadlin discussed with him smuggling routes used by Iran via air, land and sea, and the Iranian aid granted to provide weapons to various terrorist groups in the Middle East. Additionally, he covered the situation in southern Lebanon, Hezbollah's violations of the UN Resolution 1701 ceasefire agreement, the Iranian nuclear project, as well as other issues.

Later on, during a meeting between President Shimon Peres and the UN Secretary-General, along with the Head of the IDF Planning Directorate, Maj. Gen. Amir Eshel, they discussed the strategic issues facing the Middle East. Maj. Gen. Eshel updated Ban Ki-Moon on the IDF cooperation with UN agencies and peace-keeping forces operating in the region, as well as the situation in southern Lebanon. In addition, he updated the UN Secretary-General and President Peres about the status of IDF investigations of the military's conduct during Operation Cast Lead.

Two IDF representatives addressed the issue of the abducted soldier Gilad Shalit, and discussed insights of the changing battle scene going on inside the dense urban areas and underground in the Gaza Strip.

On Sunday (Mar. 21), at the request of the UN Secretary-General and the Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ban Ki-Moon will meet with IDF officers who participated in the rescue and medical aid mission after the recent earthquake disaster in Haiti.
