UK Defence Industry Welcomes Closer Ties with Indian Industry

£700m Hawk trainer supply to Indian Armed Forces supports British Jobs

17:14 GMT, July 28, 2010 A|D|S, the UK’s AeroSpace, Defence and Security trade organisation today (Wednesday) welcomed the announcement that BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will supply the Indian Armed forces with 57 Hawk trainer aircraft and ensure 200 jobs in the UK.

Rees Ward, Chief Executive of A|D|S, said: “Today’s announcement is further confirmation that UK defence Industry produces first class products and is highly competitive on the world stage. It is also a clear indicator of why the UK defence industry is second only to the US in terms of exports, with increased exports last year up to £7.2Bn. This agreement is the product of sustained investment by the Government and Industry over decades.

“India has established itself as one of the most exciting emerging aerospace and defence markets with Bangalore being its beating industrial heart, and it is only right for the UK to establish itself here.

“UK industry is developing a number of ground breaking partnerships with Indian industry which should lead to improved support to both nations’ Armed Forces and increased economic value. We hope this partnership is a stepping stone to further collaboration between our two nations on projects such as the Eurofighter Typhoon.”
