Latvian Defence Minister meets NGO to discuss current events in defence sector 

06:39 GMT, September 3, 2010 On September 2, 2010, Latvian Minister of Defence Imants Liegis met non-governmental organizations (NGO) representatives to discuss current events in defence sector and promote further cooperation.

Minister of Defence informed NGOs about defence priorities in Latvia – NAF Air Base “Lielvarde” aerodrome construction, implementation of Sea Surveillance system and international military exercises. Minister introduced attendants with amendments in laws and regulations regarding defence sector.

Minister of Defence also emphasized that it is very important for our National Military Forces (NAF) to participate in NATO and asked for assistance from NGO in order to explain society that it is essential for NAF to take part in ISAF operation in Afghanistan.

Minister of Defence also talked about necessity to enhance the patriotic education of youth and the big role of NGOs in this process. The opportunity to participate in events (competitions, summer camps, memorial gatherings, etc.) organized by NGOs is a significant motivation for young people to join Youth Guard.

Representatives of NGOs expressed gratification about cooperation with Ministry of Defence, pointed out the most successful activities this year and also indicated the problems in the field.
