12:25 GMT, October 11, 2008 NATO and the U.S. Wednesday said it will supply over 6,000 up-armored Humvees and more than 75,000 M-16 rifles to equip Afghan government forces over the next year. The Humvee is a commonly-used tactical vehicle by Afghanistan-based NATO ISAF troops.
This move will be "a huge capability and mobility boost" for the over 150,000-strong Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF), consisting of Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police, the U.S.-led military noted in a press release.
The Coalition forces said the Afghan forces will use M-16 rifles, which have high accuracy and durability, to update their existed primary weapons, mainly Russian-built AK-47.
According to an official press release of the U.S.-led Coalition forces, the ANSF has already received nearly 600 Humvees and more than 6,000 M-16 rifles.
